How do I sign up?

To sign up, tell your teacher about this competition and to register on this website (www.harlemSpellingBee.com). Your teacher has to be the one to register your class/school by Friday, April 14th and then they will receive more information to get you going.

How do I win?

To win the Harlem Spelling Bee, you have to beat students in two rounds:

  • Round One From April 3rd - April 28th, you will be preparing for your Local School Competition, which is an online exam that tests your vocabulary. The two students who score the highest from each grade from each school will become Finalists.
  • Round Two From May 8th - May 25th, Finalists will be preparing for the Main Event, which is the actual spelling bee on stage. To win, you have to be the last one(s) standing.

What words will be used?

Each grade from one (1) through eight (8) has about 75 spelling bee words, though not all of them will be used. All words are grouped by their grade level and the actual word list is available on the "Explore" page.

How can I prepare for this competition?

One way you can prepare for this spelling bee competition is by using Leksi, an online app that will help you improve your vocabulary and spelling. After your teacher registers your class/school, you will receive information allowing you to log in and use Leksi. Once you log in, you can learn and practice all of the words by completing both the vocabulary and spelling games. By completing all of the activities for each word and putting the time in to prepare, you'll have better chances at winning. If you want to win, prove it.

What are some spelling tips and tricks?

The National Spelling Bee has a great guide. Click the following link to check out some spelling tips and tricks: How to Study for a Spelling Bee.

If I win, do I get anything?

The winners for each grade level will indeed receive prizes. All active participants will receive medals for their effort and courage in preparing for and competing in this big event.

How do I register my school?

To register your school, click here to submit the registration form by the Friday, April 14th deadline. This ensures your school is on our official registration list. You'll then receive an email from us with further instructions/guides.

Please note that because of potential space limitations for this event, registration and participation may be on a first-come, first-serve basis. We strongly encourage you to enroll as soon as you can. All schools that register, regardless if they're on the waiting list or not, will still receive full access to the Leksi application.

Is this free?

This is indeed free! If you haven't registered your school yet before the Friday, April 14th deadline, please do so here. The Leksi application is also free and will remain so through the end of this school year for all registered schools.

How many students from my school can compete?

At every school, two (2) students will be selected from grades 1 through 8 as Finalists to compete in the Main Event in May. To determine how students become Finalists, there will be Local School Competitions from Monday, May 1st - Friday, May 5th. A "Local School Competition" is a vocabulary assessment that will be made available via the online Leksi application. All students must complete this assessment at some point during the first week in May. The two students who score the highest from each grade are deemed "Finalists".

How can my students practice for this competition?

One way your students can prepare for this spelling bee competition is by letting and encouraging them to use the online Leksi application. Leksi is free for you and your students after you register your class/school. With an account, students can study any of the words on the spelling bee list and you, as the teacher, can support their learning via built-in tools made just for you. You can also try other online tools such as Vocabulary.com or Quizlet.

Why should we sponsor this event?

This is the very first Harlem Spelling Bee, which promotes literacy and vocabulary development. We're excited about and focus on vocabulary because it's the biggest indicator of a student's success in and outside of the classroom. If we want a stronger Harlem community that's more educated and econimically sound, we believe vocabulary - and your support - will help get us there.

How can we support?

It's great to hear you'd like to be part of this special event. Because this is free for schools/students, your help - whether you provide in-kind donations, financial contributions, or just give out flyers - will go a long way. Please submit the form below to get started.
